Spring Project, and new "abundant life!'

9/20/2020

"The Spring Project" is the next stage in our focus on 'abundant life'  at The Avenue, during the various stages of Covid 19 isolation this year.  Many people across the congregation have contributed to these projects; a truly intergenerational affair!  It's an affirmation that, while our building may be closed, the church isn't, and neither is GOD's Spirit.  We believe that the world around us gives glory to the creativity, mystery, and sacredness that we understand as GOD.  Thanks to everyone who has joined in the fun and ministry of these projects, and watch this space!

The Heart Project

This is the third of our Covid projects, aimed at using our building as a kind of billboard witness for the community.  “The building may be closed, but the congregation isn’t”, is the vibe we’re going for.  The paper dolls from our Pentecost are still with us, now reshaped into new expressions of life and hope, with the theme “Love is at the heart of it”.

Even as the public work on the project happened, we had people saying to us “I hope you’re not taking the dolls down!”, and “Thank you, I love what you’ve done here”.
It seems that brightening people’s day is an important gift in these times!  Click here to view.

This video comes out of an intergenerational ‘community presence’ project at The Avenue Uniting Church at Pentecost this year (31st May 2020).  It’s simply a way of many different people saying to the community “The building is closed, but the church isn’t!”.  Over 300 paper dolls were placed on the outside walls of the building, together with the words “Companions on the journey” and “We are here to help each other”.    Watch the Video by Bronwyn Carnes here.

Easter Butterfly Project

On Easter Day,  a dramatic transformation was seen on the outside of The Avenue building.  The stark cross will still there after Good Friday, but now it and the building walls were festooned in colourful butterflies to represent the new life of Easter.   Death remains real, but life continues and is renewed in the Spirit of GOD.  The Gospel stories of Jesus' death, and the resurrection that follows, call us into hope- even in the midst of Covid and the messiness of life and physical distancing.  Watch the video at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=542724729719013
