Outer Eastern Asylum Seeker Support Network

The Avenue congregation has a long history of
concern for asylum seekers and refugees going back to the 1970's and 80’s when many people from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos were assisted. Housing was sought,
furniture and food provided, employment found, and relationships developed with many families. These people have been grateful for the welcome and assistance given as they settled into life in Melbourne.

Over the past 11 years, we have been part of a network of Uniting Churches in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne financially supporting and advocating for people seeking asylum in Australia.  Many members of the congregation financially support the Network to provide accommodation and household support for asylum seekers living in our local community as they await the outcome of applications for residency.  Currently we provide three homes in the area for this purpose. We conduct these activities in conjunction with the Uniting Church Lentara Uniting Care Asylum Seeker Project.
